About the Artist and Work:
Shelley Hordiyuk creates abstracted paintings inspired by nature, working primarily in acrylic, sometimes incorporating collage, oil, and ink. Her process is intuitive, allowing each piece to evolve through layers of colour, texture, and gesture.
Central to Shelley’s work is an ongoing exploration of beauty. She is drawn to questions that challenge conventional ideas of what we value. Is a bouquet most beautiful when it is freshly arranged, or after time has softened its petals? Is the beauty of a tree found in its leaves, its weathered bark, its setting, or in the changing light that filters through its branches? Does a landscape’s beauty lie in its lushness, or can it also be found in drought and decay? Whether painting flowers, trees, landscapes, or the human figure, Shelley seeks the beauty that exists beyond the obvious—beauty shaped by time, resilience, light, and transformation.
Shelley paints quietly in her home studio, surrounded by photographs, natural light, and the rhythms of daily life. Outside the studio, she sings with a local classical choir and works as a personal trainer specializing in older adults. These practices of observation, discipline, and connection subtly inform her creative life.
Her artistic education includes studies in photography, sculpture, life drawing, and painting. Shelley has exhibited in galleries on Vancouver Island, Vancouver, and in galleries in London, UK. Her work is held in private collections across Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Shelley hopes her paintings offer moments of joy, curiosity, and reflection.
