About the Artist:
My name is Cameron Wallace and I am an artist, musician and educator based in Lekwungen territory. I am interested in the expressive, emotional, and intellectual aspects of all forms of art and artistry. I hope that art is impactful and impressionable on the audience; that it is thought provoking and leads to discourse and discussion. I feel that there needs to be a healthy discourse in the public space, that people share their ideas and reactions. I spend a lot of time thinking about the madness of the world and believe that art can be a counter force to this madness. I wish for peace and dignity for all people.
About the Work:
One day, after painting outside, I returned home and wondered what to do with the paint on my pallett. I drew a cave motif. After other painting sessions, with distinct colour schemes, I did the same until it coalesced into a cohesive work. The effect is reminiscent of a film strip in which the colour and shape of the subject is constantly shifting. The mouth of a cave serves as an ancient and archetypal subject. I think at first of coming out of the darkness into the light but the image can also be of a glance behind as we descend into the depth. It evokes ideas of birth and death, knowledge and ignorance, awakening and sleeping, mystery and security.
