This artist talk will focus on the capacity for public art to either foster or destabilize a sense of being “at home” for people who live in a neighbourhood. The main project discussed in the talk will be the Tiny Town transitional housing unit, and other public art projects will also be drawn from. The discussion will be open-ended and collaborative, with the audience invited to share their own expertise.

This talk is part of CreativeMornings July theme of “home.” You can spend a lifetime looking for a sense of home. Sometimes we must leave our home in order to find it. In his poem “Journey Home,” Rabindranath Tagore writes, “The traveler has to knock at every alien door to come to his own.”

Home can be a place we belong, home can be found among people we love, home can be carried with you wherever you go. Home can be formed by people creating together.

Home is a direction we’re tilted towards. Home is something we have to remake again and again. What home have you built for yourself? What can we do to build a home for each other?

The Kansas City chapter chose this month’s exploration of Home and Allison Kerek Williams illustrated the theme.

About Kay Gallivan: “I am a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator who lives on Lekwungen Territory. I like local biodiversity, social practice, collaboration, myths and archetypes, textile patterns, and bright, emotional colour schemes. I think that place-based art is at its best when it invites us to see our surroundings with more wonder, connection, and sensitivity. Some of my favourite colour palettes come from the sky and some of my favourite sounds and textures come from the water.”
