4. NAMING A CRISIS – artists and community respond
More than 16,000 people have died from toxic drugs across BC since the government declared the overdose crisis a public health emergency on April 14, 2016. A decade on, nearly five people a day are dying. A new multimedia arts installation, Naming a Crisis, seeks to show the magnitude of this crisis, one name at a time. In April, the names and photos of people who have died will be projected on a wall in the Victoria Arts Council space in the Bay Centre. While watching the names of lost loved ones scroll past, people can wear headphones to hear their names read aloud, a powerful memorial to people killed by drug-related harms. This collaborative arts exhibition will serve as a space for collective grief, reflection and resistance over the month of April.
