Join us online for the next edition of CreativeMornings/Victoria. December’s theme is INVISIBLE. We are proud to have local playwright, Rick Waines, as this month’s speaker.

When asked about his thoughts on the theme, Rick said:

“I was asked to be invisible, my community wanted me to remain so.

I am not certain why my instinct toward disclosure won out. I can’t say that I come from the kind of people known for speaking out. My uncle wanted me to remain invisible, like he was trying to remain. Everyone I knew with my condition in the early 80’s wanted nothing to do with the attention that GRID, and the four H’s promised.

For this talk I will give you an overview of my work in the theatre as an AIDS educator. I guess that is what I am, an AIDS educator that works in the theatre. But as I hope to demonstrate, AIDS is a lens through which many of our cultures non viral conditions can be understood.

Today, this may seem a bit anachronistic, educating and writing about HIV/AIDS. So many other concerns have displaced this wee but mighty virus/syndrome from our collective memory. No matter, I will continue. Especially now, as we struggle with our most recent pandemic.

34 years since being diagnosed with HIV, and it keeps asking me to write.”

About the speaker:
Rick Waines is a playwright working on the unceded territories of the lək̓ʷəŋən People, known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. His third play, a verbatim drama In My Day, is in development at Zee Zee Theatre and is slated for a production at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in December of 2022.
